Full STEAM Ahead: Nurturing Future Innovators at Youbellor Medford

While “STEAM” (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) is a term often reserved for high school labs or tech startups, at Youbellor Academy, we believe the foundation for these critical skills is actually laid much earlier—in the curious minds of our infants and toddlers.

At our Medford campus, STEAM isn’t just a weekly lesson; it is the very fabric of our curriculum. By integrating these five disciplines into daily play, we aren’t just teaching children facts; we are teaching them how to think, how to wonder, and how to solve problems.

Science: The Power of “Why?”

For an infant or toddler, science is the ultimate sensory experience. It starts with simple observations: What happens when I drop this silk scarf? Why does the water change color when we add a drop of blue paint?

In our classrooms, we encourage this natural curiosity through hands-on exploration. Our educators facilitate “scientific thinking” by providing materials with different textures, weights, and temperatures. Whether we are exploring the lifecycle of a plant in our garden area or feeling the cold “crunch” of ice during sensory play, we are teaching our students that the world is a laboratory waiting to be discovered.

Technology: Tools for Discovery

In early childhood education, technology isn’t about screen time—it’s about tools. We introduce our Medford students to simple machines and instruments that extend their natural capabilities. This includes using magnifying glasses to inspect the intricate patterns on a leaf or simple scales to learn about balance. By interacting with these tools, children begin to understand that technology is a way to solve problems and see the world from a new perspective.

Engineering: Building Big Dreams

Walk into our toddler rooms, and you’ll see engineering in its purest form. When a child carefully stacks wooden blocks to create a skyscraper, they are experimenting with physics, stability, and spatial awareness.

Our Medford educators challenge our little engineers to think critically: “How can we make the base wider so the tower doesn’t tip?” These moments of trial and error are where true learning happens. We provide a variety of building materials—from magnetic tiles, to blocks, to cardboard—allowing children to design, test, and improve their creations. This builds the resilience and grit necessary for future success in any field.

Arts: The Heart of Innovation

The “A” in STEAM is what makes innovation human. At Youbellor, we aren’t worried about making a perfect picture that looks like everyone else’s; we want our students to explore the process of creation.

Through finger painting, clay sculpting, and rhythmic music, children express their internal worlds. Art encourages the out-of the-box thinking that is required for scientific breakthroughs. It develops fine motor skills and emotional intelligence, ensuring that technical skills are always balanced with creativity.

Mathematics: Patterns and Play

Math is all around us in Medford! We find it in the rhythm of a song, the sequence of our daily schedule, and the way we sort our snack-time fruit by color and shape. Early math at Youbellor focuses on number sense, patterns, and attributes. By counting steps as we walk or noticing the symmetry in a butterfly’s wings, we make mathematics a tangible, joyful part of every child’s day.

Growing the Next Generation

By the time a child moves on from Youbellor Academy, they carry more than just memories of play. They carry the “STEAM Mindset”—a unique blend of curiosity, technical skill, and creative confidence. We invite our Medford families to look closer at the play happening in our classrooms. You aren’t just seeing blocks and paint; you’re seeing the first steps of the scientists, artists, and engineers of tomorrow.
